PAVE: How is the Wisconsin DOT preparing for AVs? What steps have already been taken?
WisDOT has three groups that are focused on CAVs. The first group includes the Wisconsin Automated Vehicle External Advisory (WAVE) Committee. The WAVE Committee includes representatives from the private sector, non-profit groups, various associations, academia, and other government agencies. Their main purpose is to provide input and advice on policies, processes, and projects that facilitate and enhance CAV initiatives throughout the state. The second group is called iCAV and it included DOT leadership. iCAV has several subcommittees that help to drive organizational work activities related to CAV. The subcommittees cover a wide range of topics including:
- Statute, Policy and Regulation
- Communications and Outreach
- Organizational Alignment, Coordination, and Readiness
- Develop Transportation System Infrastructure and Operations Readiness
- Research, Testing, and Pilot Projects
- Data Governance and Security
- Law Enforcement and First Responder Services
The last group is positioned within the Bureau of Traffic Operations. The group supports CAV-related pilots in close coordination with WisDOT’s university-partners, and serves as the technical resource to the Department.
PAVE: What AV deployments/tests have taken place in Wisconsin?
To date, AV deployments have been limited in Wisconsin. WisDOT supported deployment of an autonomous shuttle in Racine, WI: https://engineering.wisc.edu/news/collaboration-drives-advances-in-av-understanding/
Also, WisDOT has developed training for law enforcement and other emergency responders on how to deal with traffic incidents when an AV is involved.
PAVE: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from your work with AVs?
As an Infrastructure Owner Operator (IOO), CAV work has amplified the increasing need for a diverse workforce in order to fully realize the benefits of the digital infrastructure we are investing in.
