[BRUSSELS, 16/06/25] – Partners for Automated Vehicle Education Europe (PAVE Europe), a coalition dedicated to fostering understanding and awareness of automated vehicle (AV) technology, proudly announces the release of its latest white paper: “The Future of Public Transportation: Embracing Autonomous Mobility.” Written by PAVE Europe’s Public Transport and Shared Mobility Working Group, this paper outlines how autonomous vehicles can help public transport systems become more inclusive, sustainable, and efficient.
‘This paper presents a compelling vision of a future where public transport is seamlessly integrated with AV solutions,’ said Karl Obermair, Charman of PAVE Europe and Director of Future Mobility Solutions at TÜV Rheinland. ‘It highlights both the challenges and the transformative potential of AVs in reshaping urban, suburban, and rural mobility.’
Autonomous mobility is not a substitute for public transport – it is an enabler of greater access, flexibility and efficiency across the network. The white paper shows how AVs can bridge service gaps in underserved communities, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and support cities in reclaiming public space. From robo-shuttles, last-mile connectivity, and dynamic routing that reduces emissions, the publication presents a practical roadmap for aligning AV deployment with broader societal goals.
The publication offers clear, evidence-based recommendations for transport authorities, decision-makers, and technology providers. It addresses workforce transitions, regulatory frameworks, and strategies to build public trust – such as piloting AV services with transparent safety reporting.
‘The integration of AVs into public transportation networks is about equity, sustainability, and efficiency for European cities,’ added Guido Di Pasquale, Managing Director of PAVE Europe. ‘We invite stakeholders from across Europe to explore how AVs can help public transport better serve everyone.’
Key Highlights
- Identification of key barriers in current public transport systems, including service gaps, cost pressures, and driver shortages.
- Strategic steps for AV integration: phased deployment, workforce upskilling, and community-focused pilot programs.
- Strong advocacy for deploying AVs in underserved areas to promote equity and improve access.
PAVE Europe’s Public Transport and Shared Mobility Working Group is led by Jonas Wigger (MOIA) and Javier Guimerá Tena (Padam Mobility). The white paper was written by Nathalie Teer (EasyMile) and Mitja Mook (ioki), and its editors included Lukas Neckermann (Neckermann Strategic Advisors) and Professor William Riggs (University of San Francisco).
