WASHINGTON – Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE) is honored to join the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Roadway Safety Strategy’s Call to Action campaign, which the Department announced this morning. The campaign unites diverse organizations in a commitment to take specific actions to reduce roadway injuries and deaths in 2023.
“We are grateful for Secretary Buttigieg’s leadership on this road safety effort, and PAVE is honored to be called upon by USDOT to join the campaign,” said PAVE Executive Director Tara Andringa. “Automated technologies can dramatically improve roadway safety, but drivers need to know how to safely use these technologies and to understand the limitations. PAVE is eager to build these new initiatives to help promote the safe use of AV technologies – and, in doing so, help improve safety on our roads.”
The Call to Action marks the year anniversary of the National Roadway Safety Strategy, which is the Department’s comprehensive approach to enhancing the safety of the nation’s transportation system and reducing roadway injuries and deaths. Each organization participating in the Call to Action commits to specific actions that will help to advance road safety.
PAVE’s commitments for the Call to Action include:
- National Virtual Town Hall: PAVE will host a virtual town hall to increase awareness of the safety benefits of automated vehicle technology. This interactive forum will allow the public to submit questions to industry experts, learn about opportunities to advance traffic safety in their own communities, and share their perspective on improving mobility with government officials.
- Public Sector Toolkit: PAVE will develop a toolkit for state departments of transportation (DOTs) and state highway safety officers to use in communicating with the public about automated vehicle technologies. The toolkit will include guidance on clearly communicating the differences between Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and automated vehicles, content to use on social media and in their communities, and reference documents to answer common questions about the technology.
- Teen Driver Education on Automated Technology: Teen drivers are likely to encounter driver-assistance technologies, but they may not be aware of their capabilities and limitations. To reduce the risk of misuse, PAVE will create educational materials targeted to new and young drivers that provide a clear understanding of how ADAS works and their driving responsibilities when these features are engaged.
