PAVE: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from your work with AVs?
The technology and public acceptance is moving faster than the policy that governs AVs and the complimentary industries that service it.
PAVE: How is Florida preparing for AVs? What steps have you already taken?
Florida has a very progressive approach to AV policy. This has allowed the JTA to move forward with the U2C program, which is a $44M project that is currently in the active RFP stage. This program will put a fleet of 12-15 AVs in Jacksonville’s Bay Street Innovation Corridor (BSIC).
PAVE: What AV deployments/tests have taken place in your area?
During the pandemic, the JTA deployed four AVs on the Mayo Campus to transport COVID-19 test specimens in L4 autonomy. We also have a fully operational test facility, currently with three vehicles that we run through a battery of tests to understand how they will operate in our specified ODD.
