We are excited to share our unforgettable experience at the Automated Road Transportation Symposium (ARTS2023) held in San Francisco, on 9-13 July 2023.
The event, enriched with #automatedmobility insights, brought us closer to the transformative potential of autonomous vehicles and their societal impact.
Our journey at ARTS2023 commenced with active participation in the 26th edition of the International Task Force on Vehicle-Highway Automation (ITFVHA) meeting, meticulously organized by Tom Alkim. We were thrilled to contribute with our own Managing Director, Guido Di Pasquale, to the session on AV education and societal benefits alongside esteemed panelists like David Yang, Rebecca Posner, and Sina Nordhoff. Together, we delved into the profound societal advantages of automation and devised effective strategies to educate the public about this #transformative technology.
ITFVHA offered an enlightening presentation by Rob Patrick, where we learned more about our founding member Waymo’s innovative approach to First Responders.
Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Tom Alkim and Richard Bishop for bringing together this remarkable community for the past 25 years. Special thanks to William Riggs for graciously hosting us throughout the event.
Thrilling Rides in Self-Driving Vehicles
The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly experiencing rides in Waymo’s and Cruise’s self-driving vehicles. The absence of a safety driver in mixed traffic on the streets of San Francisco demonstrated the remarkable strides in autonomous technology. We were especially delighted to organize an EU delegation study visit at Waymo, where we explored the latest developments and tested robotaxis, thanks to the efforts of Waymo’s team.
Sharing European Regulatory Frameworks and approaches
ARTS2023 provided an excellent platform for an engaging panel discussion on European Regulatory Frameworks. Our Managing Director, Guido Di Pasquale, moderated a panel discussion on European Regulatory Frameworks with esteemed representatives from the European Commission, EU Member States, and the UK reported on their progress in automated mobility regulatory frameworks to stimulate innovation.
- Maria Cristina Galassi, European Commission
- Jessica Uguccioni, Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, UK
- Elsa Lanaud, Ministères Écologie Énergie Territoires, France
- Richard Damm, Federal Motor Transport Authority, KBA, Germany
Inspiring Global Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange
We were profoundly inspired by the global collaboration and knowledge exchange within the autonomous driving space. Our visit to WeRide, supported by PAVE Europe’s member P3, further enriched our experience.
Promising Future Cooperation
The week concluded with an international cooperation meeting organized by Jane Lappin and Stephane Dreher from ERTICO and FAME Project. The gathering facilitated promising exchanges between project representatives from the EU and Japan, alongside USDOT Research and Technology and Transportation Research Board: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The discussions laid the groundwork for future cooperation in advancing autonomous mobility.
Emphasizing the Importance of Mobility Services
ARTS2023 emphasized a crucial lesson – the significance of fostering and expanding mobility services across diverse cities, communities, and transportation systems. At PAVE Europe, our mission is to unite key stakeholders to create awareness and engage in meaningful discussions with citizens about the transformative possibilities of autonomous vehicles in Europe and beyond. Our commitment lies in actively involving citizens and affected parties to ensure the effective dissemination of accurate information.
A Heartfelt Thank You
We extend our sincerest gratitude to the ARTS2023 organizers, especially Jane Lappin, Steve Shladover, and the entire team, for making this transformative symposium possible. We consider it an honor to have been part of this enriching event and eagerly look forward to applying these learnings as we embark on our journey towards a smarter and sustainable future.
