Xiaopeng Li, is a member of PAVE’s Academic Advisory Council and a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UW–Madison. In this short video, Xiaopeng explains what’s involved in getting a car to drive without a human behind the wheel. Li’s Connected Autonomous Transportation Systems (CATS) Lab works on its own self-driving vehicle.
Note: When this segment was filmed, Dr. Li’s lab was not authorized to drive on campus without a human at the wheel to act as a failsafe. The car shown is driving autonomously, but a human is in the driver’s seat as a safety precaution.
