Unlocking the Future of Goods Transportation: PAVE Europe Publishes White Paper on Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Application in Goods Transportation and Logistics

[BRUSSELS, 13/03/25] – The Partners for Automated Vehicle Education Europe (PAVE Europe), a coalition dedicated to fostering understanding and awareness of automated vehicle (AV) technology, announces the release of its latest white paper “The Case for Autonomous Vehicles in Goods Transportation and Logistics.” This paper explores the diverse applications of AV technology in the transportation of goods and explores the evolving landscape across off-road goods movement, last-mile delivery, and long-haul transport.

Though passenger transport tends to dominate discussions about autonomous vehicles, the potential for AVs in goods transportation and logistics operations is both vast and highly promising. Autonomous technology is already playing a transformative role across multiple use cases; streamlining operations, improving efficiency, and offering tangible economic and environmental benefits.

The paper identifies three sectors where autonomous vehicles are gaining traction in goods transport:

  • Off-road Goods Movement: AV technology is already proving invaluable in controlled environments such as warehouses, factories, and ports, where it enhances safety and operational efficiency.
  • Last-mile Delivery: Autonomous systems have the potential to change urban and suburban delivery networks by reducing traffic congestion, lowering emissions, and ensuring faster and more reliable deliveries.
  • Long-haul Transport: The future of highway trucking is autonomous. AVs promise to reshape logistics by increasing road safety, addressing driver shortages, and optimising supply chain efficiency for long-distance goods transportation.

“This white paper marks a significant milestone for PAVE Europe as we continue to broaden the discussion on autonomous mobility. We are proud to highlight the advanced applications of AVs in goods transport and the societal benefits these technologies will deliver,” said Karl Obermair, Chairman of PAVE Europe’s Board Director of Future Mobility Solutions at TÜV Rheinland. “By presenting these diverse use cases, we aim to foster informed dialogue among key stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, and the public.”

Key Highlights of the White Paper:

  • A comprehensive overview of the current state of autonomous vehicle application in goods transportation and logistics.
  • An exploration of off-road goods movement, last-mile delivery, and long-haul transport, providing real-world examples of the technology’s integration into logistics systems.
  • AV solutions to key challenges in goods transportation to highlight benefits such as reduced costs, improved efficiency, and addressing driver shortages.
  • An accessible resource for policymakers, industry, and the public to better understand and embrace the economic and societal benefits of autonomous vehicles in goods transportation.

“This paper provides a thorough exploration of multiple use cases for autonomous vehicle solutions in goods transportation and logistics. We hope it will serve as a valuable resource for those looking to engage in meaningful conversations about the future of goods transportation,” said Guido Di Pasquale, Managing Director at PAVE Europe.

This work is part of PAVE Europe’s Working Group on ‘Goods Transportation’.
