At first glance, it makes sense that autonomous vehicles would need maps: after all, maps are how human drivers figure out how to get where they are going. But when it comes to AVs, maps are about so much more than just navigation. In fact, they are one of the critical tools used to reduce the complexity of an AV’s task, enhancing safety and helping the technology to come to market faster. In this week’s panel discussion, we explore these unique ways in which AVs use maps, how maps are made, and how they achieve the accuracy and freshness that AVs require.
